"Winter Wonderland" Guided Snowshoe Hike

We are planning a "Winter Wonderland" guided hike on the Shabaqua Trail in the coming weeks. The route will encompass a trail section TBD (to be determined). Total trail distance also TBD, but it will be an "out and back" snowshoe hike (conditions permitting) in the 5 km. range.

It will be rated as moderate and requires the participant to be physically capable of navigating hilly, uneven terrain, and snowshoeing/hiking for 3 - 4 hours. Snow, rain, or shine, so bring appropriate clothing. Bring lunch, snacks, water, sunscreen, appropriate footwear.

Participants are expected to heed the directions of the hike leaders, and will be required to sign a waiver which will be valid for 1 year from date of signing. This will be our last guided hike in 2023, so make sure to sign up. This is your opportunity to come explore the trail and discover what it has to offer. We hope you can make it out!

Meet up at the vacant lot next to Odena Foods in Kakabeka Falls - time TBD. We will depart for the hike start location at X:XX AM. We will need to "ride-share" so a donation of $5 per person to help cover gas costs would be greatly appreciated.

Please RSVP via nworta@nworta.ca if you plan to attend so we can plan for transportation needs.

Trans Canada Trail Affiliation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NWORTA and TRANS CANADA TRAIL AFFILIATION ANNOUNCEMENT

Northwestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association (NWORTA) is thrilled to announce that we have been officially recognized by Trans Canada Trail as an affiliated trail organization and partner. Trans Canada Trail membership comes with a number of benefits, including being part of a nation-wide network of trails that connects Canadians from coast to coast to coast. As a candidate for extension to the Trans Canada Trail, NWORTA will also be eligible to apply for funding to offset the costs associated with construction, maintenance, and signage for the Shabaqua Trail and proposed Kakabeka Falls Trail.

“This is huge,” said Len Day, President of NWORTA. “We have worked hard over the past several years to get this designation, and today we are finally there. There is no question how recognizable a brand Trans Canada Trail is across Canada and throughout the world, and that affiliation will help to put the Thunder Bay region on the map in terms of increasing tourism opportunities for our area. This is testament to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers. Without them, this affiliation, and these trails, would not be possible. My hat goes off to them. Kudos, and thank you all.”

Day also noted that without support from local municipalities, this momentous occasion would not likely occur. “One of the key components to making this come to fruition is support from local municipal Councils, including O’Connor, Conmee, Oliver-Paipoonge, and the City of Thunder Bay. Having that support was very important to our organization's Trans Canada Trail acceptance. We thank them all for that support”.

Day said that, with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry trail permit approval in August, work has already started on their Shabaqua Trail on Crown lands, and to date approximately 42 kilometres of 52 have been constructed, cleared of brush, and signed with wayfinder markers. The trail currently begins at Highway 590 and Sovereign Road in O’Connor Township, then heads northwest to Shabaqua. All of this was made possible through volunteer contributions and a shoestring budget. “Rather than establishing a whole new trail, our focus has been on reusing existing old roads and trails, then connecting them together with short new connector trails. This substantially reduces trail construction costs, minimizes added impact on the forests, while providing an efficient way of adding trail distance. It’s a win-win scenario and greatly minimizes our footprint. We anticipate an official opening of the Shabaqua Trail mid next year.

Work continues to finalize the remaining 10 kilometres to connect the existing trail to Kakabeka Falls. Trans Canada Trail affiliation will help in that endeavor. “We have two possible options in that respect,” added Day.

“One involves securing approval of 2 landowners permitting our access to their property. Failing that, our Plan B is to utilize the Highway 590 right-of-way from Sovereign Road to Luckens Road, where it will connect with our proposed Kakabeka Falls Trail and potentially Kakabeka Falls itself. While the B option is not ideal in terms of user experience, it remains a viable alternative. Funding through Trans Canada Trail and other grant programs will help us offset environmental review costs associated with Ministry of Transportation corridor access requirements, and related trail construction costs”.

Day noted that work continues to secure approval of their 30 kilometre proposed Kakabeka Falls Trail. “Our intent is to extend the existing Trans Canada Trail in the City of Thunder Bay at Fort William Historical Park west along Broadway Avenue, 25th Side Road, Rosslyn Road, Harstone Road, and Luckens Road. We have had initial discussions with Oliver-Paipoonge and the City of Thunder Bay in that regard and hope to have a positive response soon. If successful, we will have added another 80 kilometres of trail to our local Trans Canada Trail system. For those traveling through our area, such a route will provide a much safer alternative vis-a-vis Highway 11/17.”

About NWORTA:

NorthWestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association (NWORTA) is a volunteer Ontario nonprofit corporation dedicated to the expansion of the existing Trans Canada Trail land trail in the District of Thunder Bay. Our 5 phase trail plan will connect Thunder Bay to the local communities of Atikokan, Nipigon, and Grand Portage Minnesota, thus providing more user groups increased free access to the Trans Canada Trail experience. Additionally, it will also serve to augment and complement the existing Trans Canada Trail water trail from Sault Ste. Marie to Winnipeg Manitoba. When completed, we will have added over 400 kilometres of new Trans Canada Trail trails in the Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.

About Trans Canada Trail:

The Trans Canada Trail (the Trail) is the longest recreational trail in the world, spanning over 28,000 kilometres on land and water. Volunteer Trail Work Party Outing

We are holding weekend volunteer trail work party outings on Sunday September 27, and Saturday October 7/23. We have rented a brush saw so that will take a lot of the workload off of manual removal of brush.

Meet at the usual location in Kakabeka Falls (vacant lot next to Odena Foods) for 9:00 AM. We will depart there at 9:30 for the worksite. Rain or shine. Bring appropriate weather gear, gloves, boots/shoes, long pants/shirt, bug spray, and sunscreen. A bug net might also be a good idea. Be sure to bring lunch, water, and snacks. Wear blaze orange as it is hunting season. Anticipated return time to Kakabeka is 4:00 PM.

If you have any questions or plan to attend, reply to nworta@nworta.ca so we have an idea of expected headcount.

Thanks,

Your NWORTA Team!

Ministry of Natural Resources Approves Shabaqua Trail Work Permit

We are pleased to announce that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Fire has approved our Shabaqua Trail Work Permit application for work on Crown lands west of Kakabeka Falls. This will allow us to connect existing roads together to form one contiguous trail. We will be organizing volunteer work parties to help make this connection. Anticipated official opening of the trail is proposed for this Fall.

Trail Information Sessions
We have 3 information sessions coming up in O'Connor, Conmee, and Oliver-Paipoonge Townships. Dates, times and other information as indicated in each of the following posts below.
We will discuss proposed trail routes from Thunder Bay to Kakabeka Falls and Shabaqua, and seek input from residents and potential users.

10/14/21:

We have been accepted as a member of Hike Ontario, which makes us qualified to access their very affordable liability policy coverage. You can help offset this cost which will protect our volunteers, landowners, and land managers. By purchasing a membership (single $20/family $30 - valid until the end of 2022) or donating whatever amount you can afford, you will help cover this cost and help make these trails come to life. By clicking on the "membership" or "donation" tab on this website, you can purchase/donate through PayPal (no PayPal account necessary). We are also working on online banking payment options as well, which should be up and running soon. Thank you.

09/13/21:

We will be holding a "Discover The Trail" day this coming Saturday September 18. It will be a short "out-and-back" 6 km/4 mi excursion along a small section of the proposed trail off the Adrian Lake Road west of Kakabeka Falls. All non-motorized activities are encouraged, however, as the trail is passable, it is not cleared (still waiting for MNR approval), which could make travel difficult for some user groups. There is parking at the trailhead for vehicles including horse trailers. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed. Outdoor Covid-19 protocols to be implemented. Come on out and experience some of the proposed Shabaqua Trail. For more info https://www.facebook.com/groups/397515397925649/events or email us nworta@hotmail.com

07/11/22

We will be hosting guided hikes along sections of the proposed Shabaqua Trail.

The first of 5 planned hikes will be Sunday July 17. This is a 12 km. hike. Meet at the start of the Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park Village Trail at Hydro Station Road east of the park. Hike departure time 10:00 AM. Expected return time 4:00 PM.

These will be one-way hikes, with return transportation provided. Please be prepared for hilly, wet, muddy terrain, and the typical biting pests we get during this time of the year. Hikes will be rain or shine. Bring snacks, lunch, and water/refreshments. 4-legged leashed pets are welcome.

This is 1 of 5 proposed guided hikes along sections of the entire trail to showcase what it will look like. We are proposing additional guided hikes, 1 in August, 2 in September, and 1 in October. All other dates TBA. We will also point out various points of interest along the way, as well as proposed camping areas and trailheads. Unfortunately, these will be "hiking only" outings.

Hope to see you there 🙂

DISCOVER THE TRAIL HIKE - Sunday July 17/22

We did our first of 5 planned guided hikes yesterday (Sunday July 17) along the "proposed" Shabaqua Trail section from Kakabeka Falls west to Strom Road. Total distance was 15.3 km/9.5 mi. Total hike time 4 hr. 27 min. 12 hikers started with 10 finishing the entire distance. Being near 30C, it certainly turned into a hot hike by mid afternoon.

This outing allowed me to refresh my memory as to the viability of the route, and what kind of work may be required. It also gave others an opportunity to see the trail, and experience what it has to offer.

The first 1.4 km. included established trails through Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park from Hydro Station Road (Village Trail) to Highway 590 (Riverside Campground). This section allows access to the falls via the parks viewing platform, and our plans are to seek incorporating this trail into the official route.

We continued for 1 km. along a Hydro One powerline corridor which parallels Highway 11/17 to the O'Connor/Conmee Township boundary. This section does have some wet, swampy areas, and tall reeds/grass, but was manageable. One of our hikers did get stung by a wasp, but was fine to carry on.

Here we veered west along the Thunder Bay Adventure Trail snowmobile trail for 3.4 km. to Smart Road. This section is a continual climb from 279 m to 387 m over 3.7 km. We discovered another great location for an official campsite we were not aware of. Unfortunately, beyond Smart Road, the landowner has denied our access to their property, so we deviated south along Smart Road for 1.8 km. to Highway 590. This section was mostly down hill at 50 m. descent over that distance.

At Highway 590 we travelled west along the highway corridor for 1.8 km. to Sovereign Road, where we turned north and hiked 1.8 km. to reconnect with the snowmobile trail at Fleming Road. This reroute has added an additional nearly 4 km to the original proposed route. We hope to be successful in gaining support from other landowners in this area.

We then headed west again for 4.15 km along Fleming Road to Strom Road, where we left a vehicle for transportation back to Kakabeka Falls. Ticks, horseflies, and mosquitos were present, but very tolerable. Wildlife included only deer, but signs of other wildlife were visible too.

Although much of the section from Smart Road to Strom Road may potentially include utilizing township roads, there are opportunities in the future to construct parallel trails to mitigate road use. As I have hiked, biked, and paddled hundreds of km. of the Trans Canada Trail, although not a preferred option, many km. of trail do utilize similar roads in Ontario and Manitoba.

Thanks to Maddison Ann and Marty Patterson for your help with this outing. Thanks to those who were able come out. Hats off to you all. It was a challenge for sure.

Our next outing will be Sunday August 7 from Strom Road west to the Adrian North Road (Adrian Lake Rd Km 9) , however the distance will be much shorter (approx. 10 km). Details to come shortly. Stay tuned. Hope you can make it out
